Different Types of Stools

Bar stools size come in four groups Counter, Bar, Extra Tall and Adjustable Height stools.

1. Measuring the Height of Stool Needed

Counter stools are most common in the home kitchen or breakfast area.  They range between 58-72cm seat height.  Bar Height stools are used at taller breakfast bar areas.  These areas are usually raised above the standard kitchen worktop height.  These stools tend the range between 74-82cm. Extra Tall models are commonly used commercially at bars and restaurants.  These tend to have a seat height around 84-92cm Lastly an Adjustable Height Stool can usually range in height from 60-80cm.  These are the most common style of stool on the market.  The gas lift adjustment allows then to be used in a variety of roles.

2. Legroom Space

You should aim to give 23-28cm for legroom.  This will allow you to easily cross and move your legs without feeling trapped.  Measure from the underside of the counter to the floor.  Then subtract between 23-28cm. depending on the amount of room you require.

3. Distance Between Stools

Another important factor to consider is how many barstools will comfortably fit at your kitchen island.  The average seat width is about 42cm and if the stool has arms that would take it to around 55cm width. You should also try to leave 15cm space between each stool.  This allows room to turn, each and drink comfortable at the kitchen bar.

4. Choosing the Depth and Backrest Height

One last thing to consider is the depth of the stool.  The depth and backrest go hand in hand as a big backrest will add to the overall depth to the stool.  The average stool depth is around 40cm.   If you add a backrest to this you can add anywhere between 5 and 12cm.  Consider your space and the traffic around where the barstools will be placed.   If your kitchen space is limited consider going for a backless option.  This will give an appearance of space and can neatly tucked under the counter when not in use.  A stool with a large backrest and possibly arms would need space.
